Hello Huskers!
This summer, I achieved one of my dreams by traveling abroad. In Amsterdam, I studied Human Trafficking, Sex Trade, and Modern Slavery through SIT for 6 weeks. I chose this program because of the strong emphasis on hands-on experiences and the courses.
My favorite experiences were exploring the beauty of Amsterdam and traveling to three other countries. Outside the classroom, I spent most of my time at museums and concerts and wandering around the city.
Living with a host family at first was a huge adjustment, but it truly made my experience. On top of immersing myself in a new culture and broadening my perspective, I felt a sense of belonging and familiarity in Amsterdam.
As a Gilman Scholarship recipient, applying for the Gilman scholarship allowed me to have financial stability to study abroad. They have a great community that looks after students abroad by providing support, ensuring safety, and providing networking opportunities.
Some of my main takeaways from this program were learning about a new culture, adaptability, independence, and learning new things about myself which will help me in my future as a Psychology student.
My advice for studying abroad is to go for it and apply for awards. Studying abroad was the best decision I have ever made because of the experiences I gained, and the amazing lifelong connections I made. Taking the time to apply for awards can ease financial stress for you. If you have any questions, I would love to answer them! My Instagram is Hannahhvick.
