Nationally competitive scholarships can also be used to fund experiences abroad during or after your time at UNL. These awards include opportunities for studying, learning a language, researching, interning, and teaching abroad.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship is a grant program that seeks to support students who are Pell Grant eligible in their study or intern abroad experiences. Applicants must be U.S citizens eligible to receive the Pell Grant who intend to study or intern abroad. Awards range from $2,500-$8,000 depending on length of program, and whether you will be studying a critical language.

The Global Experiences Office and the Office of Fellowships hold regular informational sessions and workshops during spring and fall semesters, and can advise you during the application process.
Gilman-McCain Scholarship
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad programs. Applicants must be recipients of any type of Title IV federal financial aid during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving Title IV federal financial aid during their study abroad program or internship. The Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship
The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) scholarships allows applicants to apply for several external scholarships within one application. Applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad and students participating in programs in non-traditional destinations are given preference. Funding amounts are up to $10,000 for the Academic Year, up to $5,000 for semester-long programs, and a minimum of $1,250 for the summer term. Boren Awards
Boren Scholarships (for undergraduates) and fellowships (for graduate students) provide funding opportunities for students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, such as Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Students studying in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are unable to apply for this award.
Students applying for and receiving a Boren award need to demonstrate a desire to work in the federal national security arena. Students who receive a Boren award will commit to working in the federal government for at least one year following graduation. Maximum award amounts for Boren are $8,000 for a summer program (special initiative for STEM students only, program must be at least 8 weeks long), $10,000 for a semester program, and $20,000 for a 6-12 month program.
Freeman-ASIA
Freeman-ASIA awards provides need-based funding to U.S. undergraduate students for study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Award amounts are up to $3,000 for summer programs, up to $5,000 for semester programs, and up to $7,000 for academic year programs. DAAD
Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) offers numerous scholarship programs to U.S. students wishing to study abroad in Germany. These scholarships vary widely in eligibility requirements and amount of funding. Please visit the DAAD website to view the scholarship opportunities available.

Fully Funded Programs
Some organizations offer students to opportunity to participate in specially designed programs which are fully funded by the hosting organization.
Critical Language Scholarship
The Critical Language Scholarship is a fully funded language immersion program offered by the U.S. government to support the study of critical languages. Students spent 8-10 weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. Please see the Critical Language Scholarship website for more information and deadlines.
CLS Spark
The Critical Language Scholarship is a fully funded virtual language program offered by the U.S. government. Participants will spend an academic year learning either Arabic, Chinese or Russian through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers at a host institution abroad. Project Global Officer
Project Global Officer (Project GO) provides fully funded scholarships to ROTC students for the domestic or overseas study of language and culture. The programs offered range in duration. Please see the Project Go website for more information and deadlines.
Fulbright UK Summer Institutes
The Fulbright UK Summer institutes are three-to-four week programs for U.S. undergraduate students to explore the history and culture of the United Kingdom. The institutes are hosted by various UK universities and are organized around a particular theme. Please see the Fulbright UK Summer Institutes website for more information and deadlines.
All UNL students selected for nationally competitive scholarships or fully funded programs are also required to submit the appropriate education abroad program application, an application for an Unlisted Program, or a registration of a non-credit international experience.
