PIESL conducts language proficiency testing using the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) institutional test (TOEFL itp). The TOEFL itp assesses a student's reading, structure and written expression, and listening ability. Testing is provided to the following students:
Intensive English Program (IEP) students
New students to the Intensive English Program (IEP) take the TOEFL itp upon arrival for placement into IEP class levels. This includes those who only want to study English as well as those who are working towards full admission into an academic degree program. The full exam is required for these students. Current IEP students have the option of taking the exam at the end of each semester and will be placed for the following semester according to their score and classroom performance.Current IEP students may NOT take the TOEFL itp at the beginning of each semester; this exam is for new students only.
Graduate Students fully admitted to UNL
Some conditionally admitted graduate students are required to take IEP courses to prepare for full admission. These students will participate in the TOEFL itp exams to meet the stated English Language Proficiency requirement for the respective Graduate program.
