EB-1 Outstanding Professor or Researcher Category

  1. Departmental Inquiry
    The department contacts the International Student and Scholar Office (ISSO) to obtain the link to the Legal Permanent Resident Sponsorship Form.
  2. Connection to Brown Immigration Law (BIL)
     After the ISSO receives the approved Sponsorship Form, a review meeting is scheduled with Brown Immigration Law.
  3. Review Meeting
    A review meeting is scheduled with BIL, the department administrator, and the beneficiary (employee) to discuss the necessary paperwork (letters of support, CVs, copies of publications, etc.), departmental responsibilities, and timelines. A follow-up email will be sent to the department with Form I-140 instructions and templates, and to the employee with Form I-485 instructions and supporting documents.
  4. I-140 Documentation (Department)
    I-140 and all supporting documentation are compiled and submitted to BIL for processing. BIL reviews for omissions or changes needed and returns to the department for corrections. The department completes the corrections and returns them to BIL for final review. 
  5. I-485 (Employee)
    BIL will work with the employee to complete Form I-485 for their adjustment of status to permanent resident.
  6. Submission
    Once finalized, BIL attaches the check and mails Form I-140 to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Once finalized, the employee attaches the checks and mails Form I-485 to USCIS along with the departmental I-140, or waits until after the I-140 has been approved and then submits the Form I-140 to USCIS.
