Gulchuk answers call to assist fellow Ukrainians

Tatyana Gulchuk will forever remember the faces and stories — especially the grandmas. The finance coordinator with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Big Red Business Center was among a handful of Nebraskans who recently rushed to the Polish border to assist Ukrainian refugees fleeing from the ravages of the Russian invasion.

UNITE powwow returns to celebrate graduates
UNITE brings indigenous grad celebration back to campus

Celebratory drum beats, jingling bells, song and friendship rose on the winds cascading across the University of Nebraska–Lincoln on April 23. For the first time in three years, students from UNITE — the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Intertribal Exchange — hosted their annual powwow to honor recent and upcoming Native American and indigenous graduates (from kindergarten through college). The event, which drew hundreds from across the Great Plains to the grassy knoll west of the Willa Cather Dining Center, was believed to be the first powwow held since the global pandemic started in 2020.

TAPP brings new tool to students, parents and teachers in Brazil

As students in Brazil slowly return to in-person learning following the COVID-19 pandemic, some are being introduced to a program designed to foster parent-teacher partnerships to help boost children's academic and social and emotional success. Renata T.M. Gomes, graduate student in the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools, is leading the effort to bring Teachers and Parents as Partners (TAPP) to Brazil.

Global education center at Louise Pound Hall unites Global Affairs offices

Previously spread throughout the campus, offices that provide international student support services at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will soon become accessible in the same building. The university announced in November 2021 that they have secured $5 million in funding from a private donor to transform Louise Pound Hall into a global education center. The center will bring together all four units of Global Affairs, including the International Student and Scholar Office, Global Experiences Office, Programs in English as a Second Language and Office of Global Partnerships and Initiatives.

Nebraska U helps Cano Roca pursue her passion for food safety

As a problem-solver with an affinity for STEM, it was only natural for Carmen Cano Roca to pursue food engineering as an undergraduate – coming to Nebraska all the way from Guatemala. Now, she’s completing a doctoral program as a graduate research assistant in the Department of Food Science and Technology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and looks to stay close to the community she’s built for herself in the Midwest.

Valerie Jones
Fulbright award to expand Jones’ social connectedness research

Fred and Gladys Seaton Professor Valerie Jones received a Fulbright Global Scholar Award on April 1 to study the use of emergent technology in facilitating social connectedness for aging adults in the United States and Australia. She is the first professor from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications to be named a Fulbright Scholar since 1999.

UNL global strategy enhances international education and experience

As they move forward to a new academic year, students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln can expect more global engagement programs and better international student support services through the establishment of a new global education center. The Office of Global Partnerships and Initiatives at UNL released a 2021 Global Nebraska Annual Report on April 1, 2022, to highlight the progress Global Affairs has made so far toward the Forward Together global strategy, which debuted in February 2021 alongside the N2025 Strategic Plan.

McMahon receives Fulbright for timely activism research

Virtual study abroad course exposes students to Brazilian culture

If one is looking for silver linings of the pandemic, the creative approaches used in education has to make the list. Technology allowed students and teachers to stay connected, apply new methods for teaching and learning, and help students experience the world right in their own backyard through global experience programs. While study abroad travel was prohibited during the pandemic, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln offered a series of summer classes at half the regular tuition rate as a way to provide students global experiences without international travel. 25 experiences were offered campus wide, including six in the College of Education and Human Sciences.

10 Huskers honored with Student Luminary awards
