Krutak-Bickert crucial to Global Integrative Studies’ success

Nebraska's Kat Krutak-Bickert has played a critical role in helping the School of Global Integrative Studies land on its feet and move forward as it works to prepare Huskers for future careers in anthropology, geography and global studies. Krutak-Bickert is the school's first coordinator — a post she's held since shifting from the School of Natural Resources in 2018. Her job is focused on supporting faculty, instructors and students in the school.

Aline Abayo
Abayo to study Africa’s role in global affairs through Carnegie fellowship

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Aline Abayo has been awarded a full-time research internship at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C. Abayo is a senior integrated sciences major, with a concentration in agricultural economics, from Kigali, Rwanda. She is a member of the University Honors Program and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' Undergraduate Scholars Program, a unique exchange program that has supported Rwandan students in studying priority topics identified by the Rwandan Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources.

Michael Ivashchenko
Ukrainian student coping with ‘unimaginable’ reality

Mykhailo “Michael” Ivashchenko hasn’t slept much since Feb. 24, when Russia began an invasion of his home country, Ukraine. He’s spent hours communicating with friends and family back home while also trying to be of help, even though he is thousands of miles away pursuing a master’s degree in computer science at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. As a Fulbright student, he is part of a network of Ukrainians here in Lincoln and the United States, and a group of them have banded together to raise money for humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

Patricio Grassini
Grassini is partner in project to optimize crop placement in sub-Saharan Africa

Patricio Grassini, associate professor of agronomy and horticulture, is a partner in a project led by Regrow Ag called Niche that aims to optimize crop variety placement in sub-Saharan Africa. Niche was awarded a four-year, $5 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is supported by NASA Harvest, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Africa-based nonprofit One Acre Fund.

Proposals sought for Global Experiential Learning Fund

Following the success of its Global Experience courses launched in summer 2021, the Global Experiences Office (formerly Education Abroad) is expanding the Global Experiential Learning Fund for all faculty and staff across campus to develop internationally themed courses or programs. The reimagined Global Experiential Learning Fund will be awarded to faculty and staff who propose a course or program that includes meaningful virtual or in-person learning opportunities around global engagement.

Swedish shot putter hopes to carry momentum to NCAA, World Championships

Axelina Johansson was supposed to end up in an entirely different Midwest town. But now, over 4,500 miles and an ocean away from home, the Swedish shot putter is prospering, and she plans to stick around for a few years. First, she has an NCAA medal to chase in a matter of days.

Kristina Novak
Nebraska tennis player prepares for successful campaign after championship

Nebraska sophomore tennis player Kristina Novak had a very successful 2021 season, making First-Team All-Big Ten and competing as Nebraska's No. 1 for both singles and doubles. In the offseason, she added to her list of accomplishments, winning the 2021 Slovenian National Championship in her home country in December. Novak, seeded fifth in the tournament, took down the top three seeds in her final three rounds to take home the country's crown.

Tea Time Friday offers Huskers chance to relax, enjoy Japanese culture

Whatever your choice of tea, the Kawasaki Reading Room welcomes everyone to try new flavors and connect to Japanese culture as part of its weekly Tea Time Friday program. Every Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Huskers can pick up a flavored tea and a snack outside the doors of the reading room, which is located on the third floor of the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. Members of the campus community have the option to stop by quickly to grab their tea, or stay longer and explore the reading room's quiet study space, craft workshops or more than 7,000 books on Japanese culture, history and language.

Peace Corps Prep helping students ready for global careers

Nine undergraduate students have joined the inaugural cohort of the Peace Corps Prep program this semester at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. In addition to offering targeted coursework and hands-on experiences, the program helps students build the competencies needed to serve as Peace Corps volunteers and in other international development fields.

Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a special certificate from the Peace Corps. Though completion of PC Prep does not guarantee acceptance as a Peace Corps volunteer, it gives applicants a competitive edge in addition to professional leadership and intercultural skills. For junior Katie Schmitz, the program is a critical step on her way to achieving her goal of serving in the Peace Corps after graduation.
