For School of Natural Resources student Sophia Rojas, studying abroad in South Africa offered an experiential learning opportunity that deepened her understanding of conservation and strengthened her commitment to the field.

Through a conservation-focused program led by Nebraska faculty and experienced practitioners, Sophia gained first-hand insight into ecological systems, species behavior, and the role of conservation in sustainable development.

“This experience strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in conservation,” Sophia wrote. “I left South Africa with practical skills like field identification and tracking, but more importantly, I left with a deeper sense of purpose.”

Sophia's journey underscores the impact of immersive, place-based learning. From observing elephants in the wild to discussing human-wildlife conflict, each moment offered lessons in ecology, ethics, and connection. She also learned from local conservationists whose decades of experience brought classroom concepts to life.

“Being mentored by these experts was a privilege,” she said. “Their stories, wisdom, and humility left a lasting impression on me.”
