ANDRILL team discovers ice-loving anemones in Antarctica
Using a camera-equipped robot to explore beneath the Ross Ice Shelf off Antarctica, scientists and engineers with the Antarctic Geological Drilling program made an astonishing discovery. Thousands upon thousands of small sea anemones were burrowed into the underside of the ice shelf, their tentacles protruding into frigid water like flowers on a ceiling. The new species, publicly identified in a recent PLoS ONE journal article, is the first known to live in ice.
UNL Professor awarded national honor in Poland
Tadeusz Wysocki has been named a "National Professor of Poland." The honor is a lifetime distinction that recognizes contributions to science and research.
Wysocki is a professor of computer and electronics engineering. He directs the Wireless Research Laboratory at the Peter Kiewit Institute. He learned of the honor after Poland's president, Bronisław Komorowski, sighed a decree in June. Wysocki received the award during an Oct. 31 ceremony in Warsaw, Poland.
UNL partners with African scientists on fertilizer research
The research and extension effort can both help raise subsistence farmers' income and help feed a growing global population, said UNL soil scientist Charles Wortmann, who is leading UNL's role in a new $5.65 million project to enable improved profitability of fertilizer use for 13 sub-Saharan countries.
Indian delegation learns about UNL during visit
Ten university administrators and faculty members from India visited UNL on Oct. 24 to explore the different components of a large public research university. The Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrator Program sponsored the group’s visit to Nebraska. The program exposes participants to a wide range of higher education institutions in the United States.
Meakin earns Fulbright to teach, research in India
Early in his career as a mathematician, John Meakin submitted a paper on the structure of a class of algebraic objects known as inverse semigroups, hoping to have his research published. The journal editor was impressed, but ultimately, Meakin had been "blown out of the water," as he put it, by a brilliant young man in India.
Scholarly article leads to international partnership
An author always hopes his words have impact. Ted Hamann is seeing first-hand how a 2009 journal article he co-authored led to an educational partnership between the University of Pretoria in South Africa and UNL. Hamann, an associate professor in the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences, was in Pretoria last week for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UNL and the University of Pretoria.
UNL research on cover of Royal Society of Chemistry journal
A study by a team of researchers from UNL will be featured on the cover of the Aug. 14 issue of the Journal of Materials Chemistry C, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Xiao Cheng Zeng, Ameritas University professor of chemistry, and his group report a computer-aided nanomaterials design, coined as a carbon buckyball-vanadium nanopeapod.
