English Proficiency

All non-native English speakers will need to submit English proficiency scores to enroll in full degree programs.

Students who do not meet English proficiency requirements will be conditionally admitted.

  • Conditionally admitted students will enroll in the UNL Intensive English Program for additional English instruction before beginning their degree program. Some students may qualify for the Advanced for Credit Intensive English Program.

PATHWAY TO YOUR UNL DEGREE

Intensive English Program

The IEP is for students who are conditionally admitted and students who wish to study English in the United States.

  • Intensive English language study 21-25 hours per week
  • Sessions begin in each academic term
  • All levels of study

Advanced for Credit Intensive English Program

The AFCIEP is for conditionally admitted students who have an advanced level of English proficiency, below the minimum requirement for full admission.

  • Three advanced level English courses with one additional class in your area of study for a total of 12 hours of university credit.
  • TOEFL-61 total with writing subscore of 17
  • IELTS-5.0 total with writing subscore of 4.5

Full Admission

Students who have met the English proficiency and academic requirements to begin their degree program at UNL

  • Fully admitted students can pursue a full degree course load
  • TOEFL-70 total with writing subscore of 20
  • IELTS-6.0 total with writing subscore of 5.5

* Conditional Admission: Students who have met academic requirements but who have yet to meet English Proficiency requirements
* Full Admission: Students who have met both academic and English Proficiency requirements

*Students suspected of submitting false English proficiency scores will be required to take the institutional English Placement Exam and may be subject to dismissal from the university.
